What’s the difference between “SciComm” and “science journalism”?
Anna Funk explains the difference here.
Workshops on “science communication” (“SciComm”) usually involve practicing elevator pitches, telling stories about your data, or making clearer PowerPoint presentations. They teach you how to better communicate your findings, as a scientist. This is perfect if you want to be a scientist who’s great at talking to the media, teaching kids, or connecting with people on social media.
“Science journalism” is the practice of writing about science, outside of science. It’s often harder to find guidance on this from a STEM PhD program. If you want to be a writer — not a scientist — this could be for you.
